Evacuation of Posts

Enclosed Beckwith's answer to dispatch sent to Lord Dorchester. Also enclosed orders to evacuate Fort Miamis, Detroit, Michilimackinac, Niagara, and Oswego.

McHenry informs Wayne that the governor of Canada has instructed the British army's evacuation of Fort Miami, Fort Detroit and Fort Michilimackinac. McHenry requests that Wayne make an account of the action.

Supplies Required for Running a Boundary Line

The Secretary of State has specified the supplies that Mr. Ellicott will require for running the boundary line between the United States and the territories of his Catholic Majesty [Spain]. The sector tent must be in the form that Mr. Ellicott prescribes and he will also want some alteration in the boot of the markee.

Notifies Tousard that he has directed Captain Fleming to pay the "absentees." Discusses Lieutenant Geddes' advance, the pay of the Corps of Artillerist and Engineers, the proper keeping of muster rolls and pay rolls, including accounting for deserters, and the pay of the Army detachment under the command of Captain Bruff, including pay of the soldiers' "retained bounties"

Notifies Fleming that he will receive money from Nicholas Fish for pay of "the company" and the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers. Apologizes for the lack of a regular paymaster at West Point. Directs that "absentees" be paid and that "retained bounties" be paid to soldiers. Reports results of examination of pay rolls.

Order to Appoint Subaltern Officers to Receive Rations from O'Hara

McHenry laid out plan for receiving and documenting rations; receipts to be furnished to Mr. O'Hara on forms given by the Secretary of the Treasury.

Transportation of Indian Goods, Request for Supplies

None of the Indian goods and private stores of A. Wayne have arrived at post. Requested files for armourers and blacksmiths.

Requests Permission to go to Kentucky for Business

Reports news from his brother, whom he sent on important business to Kentucky last year and who became ill and hasn't been able to conduct the business. Requests permission from the Secretary of War to go conduct his business in Kentucky. Will ask Major Beduyler to ascertain orders while he is absent. Promises not to be gone longer than 10 weeks. Has examined all arms and has arranged all summer work to await his return in August.

Intelligence on Hostilities by Chipewas

Information from Colonel Hamtramck on possible hostilities by Chipewa Indians. Wayne suggested the Chiefs should be approached to meet in council to discuss peace. Dragoons mentioned as good keepers of the peace if Indians were indeed hostile.

Murray again requests that McHenry answer a question from one of his constituents concerning bounty lands and certificates, particularly their value. The author also reports on his wife's improved health and expresses indignation at the emerging Democratic-Republicans. Murray concludes by announcing his consideration of retirement from public life.
