Title

A Most Violent Breach of Civil Authority

Description

Bentley recounts an incident in which several soldiers helped an accused horse thief to escape from the local jail. He is concerned not only about the incident itself but also about how it has been covered by what he calls the Jacobin printers, (meaning the anti-federalist press) as they continue to find fault with the "Standing Army."

notable phrase

some of the troops of the Regiment of Artillerists and Engineers of Captain Eddins's company...were guilty of a most violent breach of civil authority
one of their new recruits was discovered tro be a fugitive from justice
he had been committed to a County Court jail for horse-stealing
he was rescued by six or seven of Eddins's soldiers and suffered to make his escape
this has afforded another opportunity for the Jacobines printers to sport with the "Standing Army" as they call it
[Callender] has detailed the circumstances to the public, rather highly colored, and called on all his Yoke Mates (using his words) to notice it in their papers
