Sir
The Bearer Doctor Scandella an Italian of eminence in the Scientific works arrive a few days ago from Detroit in company with Cap Edward D. Turner. He has been introduced to me by the officers of the army as a foreigner of great merit and in particular by a letter from our friend Doctor Browen who informs me that having the misfortune to break his leg by which he was detained in Canada and thereby subjected to very considerable expenses and being unable to obtain a supply of cash at his place. I have furnished him with an old pack horse which, by the enclosed receipt, is to be delivered to you and as this horse is one of a few [undecipherable] to be sold by the Q.M. General, you will please to have him sold & inform me of the proceeds of sale which you will be please to place to my credit. He is now supposed to be worth 450 dollars.
