Hagner certifies that $2992.29 is due Samuel Hodgdon, Superintendent of Military Stores, being the balance of his account for expenditures in the military store department at Philadelphia from January through June 1796.
In wake of sudden and unexpected departure of Josiah Fox, War Office provides instructions to Forman Cheeseman, naval constructor at New York regarding the relocation of frigate timbers to Corlear's Hook in New York Harbor. Discusses orders to engage for the rental of Corlear's Hook on behalf of United States for the relocation of frigate timber.
Due to Mr. Fox's sudden departure from New York for Boston, McHenry requested Cheeseman secure Corlaer's hook for a monthly rent not to exceed 270 pounds New York currency. Also discussed securing timber.
Creek Indians refuse to sell land to Georgia. Relations of frontier people in New York uncertain. Per recent Act of Congress, McHenry requested Wayne prepare standing companies of dragoons to patrol land between posts in New York and Georgia to provide safety for garrisoned troops.
Ames has located a vessel on which he will send the musket pattern. He asks permission to employ four more hands which will enable him to keep the work going and make the business more systematic. A gentleman has asked him if the United States will contract for eight to ten stands of arms of the French Charlesville model.
Freeman requested information on Christopher Keppard, of Porteis Company, 9th battalion of artillery, discharged from Fort Wayne and John White of Peine's company of the same corps. Requested information on payment of soldiers for apprehending deserters.
Mr. Whitney, Conductor of Military Stores at Fort Fidius made paymaster by Freeman due to sickness of Ensign McCall.
Will attempt to comply with Hodgdon's request for documents, but it will take time due to the lack of clerk and poor health. Trade with Indians mentioned.
Hagner certifies that $840.48 is due the Scouts of Ohio County Virginia ordered into service by Brig. Gen. Benjamin Biggs for the protection of said county.
The Secretary of War has acknowledged Hodgdon's letter regarding the shot and kentledge cast by John and Jacob Faesch. Since Hodgdon is the person designated to examine them and judge their suitability, noone else should be appointed to perform that duty.
