Request for Refund

Simmons acknowledged receipt of letter from Carrington containing the receipt for $388.15 from Daniel Bedinger, agent of Fortifications at Norfolk. Simmons requested Carrington refund the amount to the Treasurer of the United States, the sum will be entered to Carrington's credit.

Marschalk encloses receipts for bounties paid that he did not deliver during his most recent visit to Simmons office.

Recruiting Account & Vouchers

Morris transmits his recruiting account and vouchers along with an account current, by which it will appear that the money he was charged for the recruiting service has been expended by Lt. Dyson, with a balance due Morris of $26.

Letter from Jackson that enclosed Captain Samuel Nicholson's receipt for $335. 40 received. Sum passed to the credit of Jackson's account.

Notification of Closed Account

Simmons searched records in Office prior to the arrival of Farley's letter and was able to close Farley's account. Farley was exonerated from every charge.

Muster and Pay Rolls Received

Simmons used muster and pay rolls submitted by Boote to make a pay and receipt roll. Total amount: $48.98, Boote will receive sum from Samuel Lewis. Receipt for James Ramsey, drummer totaled $5.00. Money paid to him for pursuing a deserter is suspended until Boote's recruiting account is settled.

Payment of Warrant by Secretary of War

Simmons notified Freeman that Secretary of War granted Freeman's request for payment. Simmons enclosed an extract from a letter sent by Sec. of War to Simmons on subject.

Money advanced to Price by James Mott, Treasurer of New Jersey, for pay of 2nd New Jersey regiment commanded by Capt. Joseph Stull called up to suppress an insurrection in the Western counties of Pennsylvania. The money that was issued to said regiment must be refunded to War Office since no vouchers were transmitted to Treasurer to exonerate Johnson. Col. Nevill was furnished with corrections to attend to final settlement of said expedition. Neville will visit Office on the 15th by which time Simmons hoped vouchers will be furnished by Johnson.

Vouchers Deposited Examined

Vouchers deposited by Nevill relative to the pay of the militia called out to suppress an insurrection in the western counties of Pennsylvania in 1794 were examined. Simmons wrote the various Paymasters acting under orders from Nevill to obtain vouchers to exonerate the Paymasters from the balance due. Simmons requests punctuality of Nevill at Office and all necessary accounts furnished.

Sundry Letter Enclosed and Request for Account Information

Simmons enclosed sundry letters for different Paymasters of Maryland militia called up to suppress rebellion in Western counties of Pennsylvania. Simmons requested Paymasters account for monies by producing necessary vouchers for sums paid or by refunding any balance to the Treasurer of the United States. Simmons requested Gale forward the letters to their appropriate recipient.
